One day, back in 2017, out of sheer intuition I typed ‘lofi hiphop’ into the google search bar. I never heard of the term but something in me said that was the thing I should do. I had been making beats on a qy100 and always liked hiphop that was self-produced at home with basic equipment. It Must have been a zeitgeist moment or something because that search revealed a world of beat-making that was rooted in the traditions of boom-bap, sampling, and a heavy dose of jazz. The search page showed a youtube video by someone named ‘suburbansanity‘ that had the title ‘lofi hiphop’ and maybe ‘vaporwave’ in it. Anyway, that was the beginning of a mind-blowing journey through the halls of lofihiphop, down a lot of corridors along the way with names like steezyaf, axian, and hip dozer, and the labels that made this lofi tangible like o-nei-ric tapes, inner ocean records, and insert tapes. And I’m still thankful for suburbansanity and his incredibly dope edits that started me on this adventure in beat-making way back almost ten years ago.
Peace!
