Does anyone like jazz lol? I didn’t necessarily like jazz before I started making beats, but at some point I really became fascinated with the music and the giant cast of amazing players involved. I mean, what’s going on in a jazz song anyway? This is something I’m always asking myself when listening to jazz and feeling lost. It takes a minute just to hear what’s what and even understand the basics. It’s funny because people, even those considered cultural figures, have misunderstood what’s going on in a jazz song, as if the whole thing is just made up on the spot and the players are just randomly playing away on their instruments. Especially in terms of the free-jazz form people may be compelled to think the musicians are just doing whatever they feel. But the way I see it now, it’s a much more sophisticated set of structures and arrangements that take the basics of the common musical forms to new heights. The way I see jazz players is more like musical geniuses, especially in relation to the basic four-four beats we’re all used to. They are much more technical and complex about the craft and approach a song in a myriad of new ways. Of course there’s lots of improvising in jazz and that’s what gives it that free-wheeling sense that can suggest a lack of structure, but even in the free-jazz form, I wold say there’s a lot of theory going on before hand. Anyhow, to me jazz is like hip-hop, in that I only really like about 20-30% of the wider genre, but that’s still a good chunk, and I still appreciate a skilled player/rapper/beat-maker even it it’s not my cup of tea.
